Houston’s Emancipation Park Receives $1 Million Dollar Grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission

Devin Royal with the Miller Survey takes a topographical survey of Emancipation Park Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, in Houston. Emancipation Park on the corner of Elgin and Dowling received a $1 million grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission that brings the city about three-quarters of the way to raising the $10.5 million needed for a planned redevelopment of the historic park in the Third Ward city officials said Wednesday. Plans include an “iconic” piece of sculpture and a new amphitheater for concerts. The park was founded by ex-slaves in 1872. ( Johnny Hanson / Houston Chronicle ) Photo: Johnny Hanson /
